Burger, former Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court (from 1969-1986) who worked his way through both college and law school as an insurance salesman and graduated from the St. Paul College of Law (now William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Minn.) in 1931.I can tell you that if there were a way to donate funds exclusively for the benefit of the evening division, many alumni of the evening division would offer support for the evening division.I doubt that the law school administration has explored that option.

Whether or not this cost-saving move will accomplish the goals intended and improve the the schools national rankings is being disputed by some. To that end, I have received a copy of a letter on the subject and am posting the letter en toto so that some may know the issues being raised and whether closing the night division is going to accomplish the purpose that some have in mind.

As noted above, I understand that the admission statistics of part-time division students do not count towards the U.S. News ranking, so admitting more true evening students will not adversely affect the ranking even if their credentials are not as high as some day students who might be admitted in their place.Dean Ensign seems to suggest that culty resources can be reallocated to enhance the Law Schools reputation among academics, judges and practitioners nationwide by closing the night school.This argument seems a little disingenuous, since the number of students in the Law School is unlikely to drop if the evening division is closed.Faculty resources will still be needed to teach them even if there is no night school.The same number of culty would still teach the same number of students.How does this free up resources?How does this allow the culty more time for scholarly research?The only way seriously to reallocate resources will be to have larger sections of required (including in the critical first year) and Bar courses, thus to permit [r]edirecting resources to program improvements such as new curricular offerings and enhanced skills training across the curriculum.But to do so would seem to go contrary to the Law Schools arguments a few years ago in vor of a smaller Law School with smaller classes and more personal attention for students, again especially in the first year.In addition, adjunct culty currently teach a number of courses.Many of the adjuncts work full-time during the day and may not be available to teach during the day.These adjuncts bring a practical experience to the classroom and their students.While learning black letter law is important, learning the practical application of it is invaluable.Thus, I would hope that you will view this argument warily.
